This session features: Christina Greer, Fordham University, Jeff Smith, New School for Social Research, Michael Javon Fortner, City University of New York, and Wil Pinkney, City University of New York. Smith is the author of the recent book Mr. Smith Goes to Prison (St. Martin's, 2015), a narrative nonfiction account of his time in prison; Fortner is the author of Black Silent Majority (Harvard UP, 2015) which uncovers the role African Americans played in creating today’s system of mass incarceration.

 

Disaster, Politics & Administration: Philadelphia’s Thrift Store Tragedy

In June 2013 in Philadelphia, a building under demolition collapsed on an adjacent Salvation Army Thrift Store filled with shoppers. The collapse killed 2 workers and 4 shoppers while maiming another for life. After the tragedy, the Mayor created the Special Independent Advisory Commission to Review and Evaluate Philadelphia’s Department of Licenses and Inspections. This panel, which includes 3 members of the Mayoral Commission, will consider the challenges of shrinking resources and lucrative development opportunities pose for the effective regulation of building safety.
